Why does advertising need to be regulated?

Please continue the discussion from the lesson here in this blog post with your thoughts on why advertising needs to be regulated. Referring to specific adverts in your comments will help support the points you make.

Here is a link to the Advertising Standards Authority:

www.asa.org.uk

Have a look around the site and see what else you can find out.

In addition, you may also want to comment on the 'Paddy Power' blind football advert (see below). See what else you can find out about it online.

  1. I think this should of been banned because its apparently 'offensive' to blind people, and also it is animal cruelty according to people. i looked at the website asa and it has parent advice on it as well as them checking adverts.. Katy :P

  4. I agree with Tilly I think ASA should have cheeked over it a bit more and I don't know who's side I should be on because it is offensive to blind people but at least it isn't offensive to the football team because they allowed to do this advert. It may encourage animal cruelty so people can get money but the ASA did make all of there points clear so people could understand but they still complained;(

  5. I also agree with Tilly and Caitlin, the advert should have been check over more than it was. I think this advert is offensive to blind people and even though the Paddy Power company had a good reason for the advert, i still think it shouldn't have been allowed. This advert is also encouraging animal cruelty and even though we couldn't actually see the cat being kicked, we could still hear it.
Although i have to admit that Paddy Power do have good arguments :P

  6. I think that the paddy power ad is offensive and encourages animal cruelty. advertising should be regulated because people who watch the advert might think that is the right thing to do and be influenced by it.

  7. I agree with all these comments! I do think this is quite offensive to blind people and it also may be classed as animal cruelty! It is very debateable!! As some people have said already, it definitely should have been checked over properly and yes I agree wit Daisy that some people could be influenced by it. Paddy Power did make some good agruments stating how we didn't actually see the poor, defenceless cat being kicked but this all the complaints from others offended by it did seem strong as well.

  9. I find this advert very offensive. I mean I fell very sorry for the cat. Come one the cat is innocent. I find it offensive to blind people because blind people can't help being blind!!! There are other inappropriate adverts that need to be regulated such as the boots advert!!!!!!!!!! but this advert shouldn't have been released in the first place to be honest with you. ♥ Sophia

  11. I think that actually this advert was quite good, because the Blind Football Championships were in the year that this advert came out (2010). But on the other hand, like everyone else said, it can encorage animal cruelty and it might be offensive to blind people. I'm not that sure :-/. Maybe if 'Paddy Power' said something like 'Please don't try this at home' or 'In aid of the Blind Football Championships this year' or even say that 'Tiddles' was not hurt or injured in the making of the video, then I would be more surer than I am now. I think that maybe the ASA let it be on T.V. because of the Blind Football Championships.

    Lauren ;-) :-)

  16. I agree with all the other comments,I think 'Paddy Power' could be offensive to blind people and other people too.
When the man accidentally kicked the cat, even though you couldn't see the cat being kicked it could encourage animal cruelty. The ASA should of checked this before it was put on the television.Nicole

  17. I agree with everyone I think paddy power is offensive to blind people and others too and is animal cruelty too. Even though you couldn't see the cat get kicked you could still here it and that is animal cruelty. The ASA should of checked this properly before they put it on television.:) Aisha

  18. Hi guys, :) :) I agree with all the comments above. It is extremely OFFENSIVE to both blind people and animals. Advertisers should be socially responsible, careful and mindful of the content they produce and at whose expense. Isha :)

  19. I agree with everyone, that it is animal cruelty. Paddy's Power has a good argument because we didn't see the man kick the cat.

  20. hey everyone! I agree with most people, despite their argument I think that paddy power have not thought about younger audiences such as teens! a 15, 16 year old could take it as a funny joke but then maybe try it out and encourage animal cruelty. But to the other comments, I don't believe this is the ASA's fault, they didn't make the advert, I personally blame paddy power for such a horrid advert! as well, I think that this isn't exactly offensive to the game blind ball, but with bad idea of blind competence and awareness!
    Thanks for reading,

  21. I agree with everyone first of all its offensive to the blind because they can't see and to make it even worse there showing that they can't see by kicking a cat which also makes it animal cruelty plus I agree with Rosie about paddy power haven't thought about the audience I mean no matter what age could see this especially kids up to teens could encourage them to do animal cruelty also it can encourage them to be offensive to the blind. But at the same time Paddy Power did make a very good argument!!
    Madeen :D

PS. SORRY it was late i just realised that my comment was for some reason not shown so I had to do it again but didn't had time but now I do! :)
